The AgeWell Group

The ‘AGEWELL’ group at Meden Vale has been organising activities for the people of Warsops. One of these activities is the Monday Lunch Club. This provides morning tea/coffee, gentle exercise and games session, Lunch and bingo and outing to places of interest.

With the help of the Community Physical Activity Officer, the gentle exercise and games sessions have proved popular. There is now a session every Monday from 10.30 to 11.30 at the Warsop Parish Centre’s Tudor Barn.

The AgeWell Group

Now with the funding support of the Warsop Neighbour hood Management Team the group have been able to extend the sessions by purchasing equipment. This equipment is stored at the Warsop Parish Centre.
Having their own equipment and with training on its use the group members are able to play games as and when they want to.

The funding enabled the purchase of Skittles, Boccia balls, Bean Bags, Parachute, Quoits and Bump Balls. The equipment is user friendly and encourages interaction and improves upper body mobility.

Some quotes from the participants:

‘I cannot afford big prices so these activities are great and low cost.’

‘I am far too busy for exercise, but these are fun and enjoyable’

I am too old for exercise, but these are gentle and I can do as much as I want’

‘I am not a sporty person, but these are not competitive, and I enjoy them’

‘I would not be able to get to venues, but this is very near and familiar and with friendly people in similar situation as me’

‘I really like the fun and enjoyment. And to socialise with everyone’

Neighbourhood Wardens - (Project funded from central NRF funding pot)

Mansfield District Council and Warsop NMT run a neighbourhood Warden
scheme covering the Warsop NMT area. The scheme employs a pair of Wardens currently working from the Town Hall in Warsop. This is probably one of the oldest and most successful Warden Scheme in the District. Mark and Mac have been a regular feature out on patrol in the local area. Recently Mac has been transferred to new pastures and Mark has been joined by a new partner, Warden Sam! They will continue to provide regular high visibility patrols on the NMT area working with local people, the police and other organisations to tackle crime and anti social behaviour. The Wardens will form a key part of the new Police Safer Neighbourhood team which will operate in Market Warsop.
Mark and Sam will then work from Warsop Police Station to keep in close daily touch with the local Police Beat Manager.

Salvation Army Safety Equipment

The Safety Equipment Loan Scheme is running smoothly into the new financial year, although there may be a small shortfall in funding this year, we believe we will be able to operate until the end of the next financial year, by being subsidised by the Salvation Army.

The scheme is operating daily, delivering into all areas of Mansfield, Mansfield woodhouse and Warsop, last year we made 629 deliveries of equipment, showing that there is still a great need for this project.

The people of Mansfield District are grateful to you, the NMT’s, Sure Start and the Coalfields regeneration trust, for generously funding this scheme, making Mansfield a safer place to bring up children.

The Mansfield Safety Equipment Loan Scheme would like to say Thank You once again.
Report kindly supplied by: Stephen Hicks (Salvation Army, Community Project Co-ordinator)

Market Sustainability Project (WPRA)

NRF provided funding for Warsop Community Market, the money provided was used to pay for the facility to store the market stalls owned by Warsop, pay for 3 young workers to erect the stalls and waste disposal for the market refuse.  The money also paid for 2 promotional events and advertisement within local press to promote the market.

When WPRA took over the control of the market, in January 2005,
there were 4 regular traders - today, after 18 months, there is a regular attendance by 10 - 12 traders and we look to welcome new traders and extend the level of service available to the community of Warsop.

Credit Union, Expansion through Schools Project

Warsop NRF funding was used to cover 50% of the cost towards a worker to provide admin support for the Credit Union, and to develop and deliver the project in order to promote membership in the Warsop area.  A poster design competition was run through Sherwood School.  The winning entries in each age group have now been incorporated in two new promotional leaflets:- one promoting the Credit Union in general to families with young children and one promoting the school saving scheme.  The number of local children, families and adults using the credit union has increased and 1 potential volunteer has been identified and interviewed.

Meden School Sport Centre Feasibility

The study produced by Mr R Betts and Fundsport UK has proven to be a valuable document that will assist and advise the Warsop Community on the future of Meden Sports Centre. Meden School had thought it a possibility that the Centre could perhaps become part of the school however, the study has shown that this would not be a viable proposition for the school to undertake due to the amount of funding that would be required to update the centre. However, the report remains an extremely useful working document for all interested parties in the future of the Centre including John Mann's office.  Report kindly supplied by Irene Hall (Meden School)

Swimming Instructor Programme

10 people enrolled on the level 1 swimming instructor’s course at the Meden swimming pool, 5 of who completed and achieved the award.  These individuals will now be offered places on the level 2 course which is due to commence in September 2006.  The project has had a number of unforeseen problems [e.g. registration of the Meden]  that have had to be overcome before the actual coach education delivery could take place, but as well as the 5 individuals who achieved the level qualification, 40 children benefited from 1 weeks free swimming instruction.

Warsop NMT Development Consultancy ( Warsop NMT)

Warsop NRF funding was used to fund the provision of a worker to work alongside and support the NMT on a short term consultancy basis.  The worker coordinated funding bids, and contributed to work on a regional and Local Development Framework planning process.  Floor targets were met due to achievements of development work, also research done and follow ups made to enhance the Warsop NMT area.  The work undertaken has helped the Warsop NMT run efficiently.  It has enabled us to attract additional resources and enabled the remaining funds to be allocated to a more diverse audience.

Young Musicians’ Project (Muso’s)

10 young bands received intensive support including one-to-one tuition and full band coaching sessions.  A full P.A system has been purchased with live performances featuring young bands on-going and planned throughout the year.  Warsop film company BESQ with support form Warsop Infotech group recorded each of the bands live onto DVD at the hugely successful ‘End of Project’ show on 1st April 2006.  Domain names have been purchased for many of the bands and website development which will include the use of the DVDs is on-going.  Several of the young people are now involved in film editing courses at Warsop Infotech, using footage shot at the 1st April show as the course subject matter.  All of the bands have made considerable improvements to the quality of their songs/compositions and their ability to perform live on stage.  A big thank you to the funders from everyone involved in Muso’s.

Bike Park Project (Meden School)

This particular project has been a God-send to the school. For some considerable time pupils have cycled to school and have had to chain their bike to whatever bit of fencing/railing they could find. This was obviously not ideal as cycles were very much open to both the weather and theft. However, thanks to the NMT's funding and fundraising by the school, a proper (and very modern) Bike Cover and area was purchased and built (which looks fantastic). This has provided a secure and dry area to park valuable bikes. The school has always been keen to encourage youngsters to cycle to school as a healthy option to taking the bus and wanted this to continue and now it can.

PA System (Meden Sports Centre)

The P.A. System was to enable Meden Sports Centre to engage in different fitness actives for residents within the community, such as aqua aerobics, salsacise and other aerobic classes.  One of the benefits is the use of the radio microphone for aqua aerobics because of the noise within the pool area.
There are now Salsacise, Aqua aerobics, Cardio Blast and Pilates classes available, with two other classes yet to be started. Meden Sports Centre has engaged in different fitness actives people within the community with the help of the funding which was provided.  Consequently helping towards a healthy population. Report kindly supplied by Dave Northcliffe (Meden Sports Centre)

Room Conversion (Meden Sports Centre)

During school hours at Meden Sports Centre all the changing areas are utilised by the Meden school. This means that the fitness facilities at the Sports Centre can’t be utilised fully because of the lack of changing and showering facilities during school hours, with the funding it has given an opportunity to a section of the community to use the fitness facilities.
There has been an increase of female users over the subsequent period, this is due to new classes that are being provided and the ability to change in the new changing room.  This has therefore been a contributing factor to the increase the health of the community.
Report kindly supplied by Dave Northcliffe (Meden Sports Centre)

Band & Choir Project (Meden School)

The band and choir at Meden school have long suffered from very poor and aged resources. However, thanks to the NMT grant they have benefited from new music stands, various new instruments, t-shirts and caps (with Meden School logos), a new banner with 'Meden School' brightly emblazoned on it and new music stand banners. These will all be used to their fullest when the group visits Salzburg in July to perform with other European schools in a touring concert. The students (and teachers) look wonderful in their new band uniforms and will represent Warsop well in this very exciting trip to Austria. Again, this funding from the NMT has made the world of difference to the students and staff here at Meden.

Technology Project (Meden School) - (Project funded from central NRF funding pot)

This project has proved to be a huge success thanks to the funding awarded by Warsop NMT. There are approximately 20 youngsters aged between 13 and 16 who are working on a variety of projects. This year we entered the Toyota Technology Challenge and will soon be entering the Trent University Robotics Challenge at the end of June. The Toyota Challenge is a two part competition which requires the group to design and make a robotic vehicle that will either run on solar power alone or solve a simple maze using a computer program and some form of sensor to "feel" around a maze.

On Friday 12th May, the group went to Toyota at Burnaston near Derby where they found out they had already beaten over 400 other teams and schools with their design folder. The group came 1st and were through to the National finals on the following Saturday!!!! Mr P Worsley (the electronics teacher running the group) and the group were all interviewed by BBC TV for a programme which was shown that evening. The group is really enjoying and benefiting enormously from the opportunity which would not have been possible if it had not been for the support of the NMT.
