Drinking In - I usually update Warsop Web late at night when I sit down to unwind with a glass of wine, so it seemed quite fitting that there should be a wine review on the site.

I admire wine-writers such as Jancis Robinson and Oz Clarke, but have never been able to work out how they get the flavours of chocolate, smoke, vanilla etc. from a wine. To me a bottle of wine tastes of grapes and I either like it or I don't, although I've managed to work out the difference between a cheap bottle of plonk and something a little more sophisticated, probably by the length of time the wine stays in my glass. With this in mind I recruited Julie and Tania, who were more than happy to help me out with a bit of tasting, especially if I provided the wine.

Just a footnote: Whilst shopping in Tesco's in Scotland, a local shopper saw me pondering over the Whisky shelf and recommended the Tesco brand of Scotch. Well, did you ever meet a Scot who didn't know how to spend money wisely? No! So, I took the advice, bought a bottle and can fully endorse the recommendation.

It has a smoothness expected in a much more expensive brand and cost just over six quid. It could be that the 'Scotch Mist' affected my judgement, so I'll be buying more of it locally just to see if it is affected by location! Look out for it - it has a plain white label stating little more than it is Scotch Whisky and that it's Tesco's own brand. It's a good buy!
