Memories of Church Warsop - By Ted Woolley
I lived at 101 Sycamore St at Ch Warsop at the end of WW2 and we had a great big bonfire in the middle of the street and Joe Tonks brought out his piano, Tom Foster broght his piano accordian and they were celebrating into the early hours of the morning.
Something funny happened in the blackout during the war at the Carr Lane Bus Stop. One night my eldest brother George was only 15 and went up to a man for a light for a cigarette, when the man lit a match our George ran into the road and my dad said is that you George and George replied 'no dad' my dad couldn;t help laughing so he could not punish George for smoking.
I remember when I was at Burns Lane School when it was the senior school in 1943_46 and Mr Pecker Bennett was headmaster and if he caught u walking with your head down he would hit you with his keys and say straighten up and walk like a soldier. Is there anyone on the Warsop Web who went to school at Warsop from 1937-46. If you did would u please get in touch with me.
In my days when I lived at Warsop the police did not summons you for trivial misdemeanors. They would more than likely give you a clip round the ear and say get off home. One night I was out with our Walt & Freddy Coe and the Police sergeant at Warsop that night boxed Freddies ears for something he did and Freddy ran up home, came back with 2 pairs od boxing gloves and told the sergeant he would fight him. We all had to laugh at Freddy as he was a bit inebriated at the time. If anyone knows freddy you ask him about it.
In 1957 I was a conductor on the welbeck childrens school bus and a lot of the children used to call me dad and one day I was out with my wife and a kid came up and said hello dad and Leah looked at me with surprise but I explained to her about the bus. Is there any of the kids on the web who used to catch my bus, Ted
